Regulations

Good to know before you ask

About one in ten Americans gets drinking water from a private well. Private wells are not regulated by the federal drinking water rules: construction is governed by state and county rules, and the owner is responsible for the water quality.

Depth, geology and the casing required drive the cost, so drillers often quote per foot. Have your well tested after drilling. We do not drill ourselves and do not show prices: ask the drillers who contact you for a written quote.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to drill a well?

In most states and counties, yes: a permit before drilling and a well log filed after. The driller usually handles both.

How deep will my well be?

It depends on the local aquifer. Drillers use nearby well logs to estimate the depth, but the final depth is known only once water is found.

Who tests the water of a private well?

The owner. EPA recommends testing private wells regularly; many health departments list certified laboratories.
